Ironicles the Cynic: on Semantics
The above poem’s provenance is doubtful. It has been pointed out that in Ironicles’ time a toilet with a bolted door was unknown. Other commentators insist that this is in fact a very free translation from a (now lost) fragment of a longer treatise on something else entirely. I am often asked whether the correct spelling of the philosopher’s name is ‘Ironicles’ with a ‘c’ or ‘Ironikles’ with a ‘k’; it is neither.
