I’m much obliged. I hope the Scots word ‘loan’ doesn’t puzzle too many of your readers.
I think I got it. Could you explain 604, the meaning of it.
Well, I’m not sure what you’re asking. Are you asking for an explanation of the poem, or of the use of ‘604’ in the title?
I don’t usually explain my poetry, because I think that would defeat the object. However, let me first give you some background to this blog. It started a few years ago as part of a joint project known as ‘small stones’, in which a number of poets undertook to write one short, not-quite-haiku per day, based on an observation made during that day. This process developed into a personal commitment to provide, at least, one poetic ‘fragment’ every day – maybe no more than a phrase but always encapsulating a discrete poetic idea. If it does nothing else, it forces me to keep creating, even when I feel barren.
My poetic background is that I have been working since the early 2000s and have worked at many forms – classical, free, and experimental – including sonnets, narrative ballads, haiku, and free verse, both in my own writing and as an editor of other people’s poetry. But overwhelmingly what has driven me is expressionism. By that I refer to the artistic movement, and to the fact that my work is very subjective, using words in unconventional ways in order to stimulate or evoke emotions, or to express meaning rather than depiction. Thus ‘fragment 604’ is an example of this.
‘604’ simply because it is the 604th piece with the title ‘fragment’ on this blog. Not everything on this blog has ‘fragment’ in the title, but this one does!
To be ‘five miles my loan/lane’ is a Scots term meaning to be that far on my journey – in this case through the day. On this particular day I have woken up in the middle of a vivid dream, and the dream state has stayed with me during the time I should have been ‘fully awake’. Thus the poem is a very short expression of that state. The dream is life-locked, part of my continuous awareness and existence, part of my ‘clime’, part of the area of the planet I walk through.
I hope that helps. Please let me know if there is anything more I can tell you.
