Great autumn poem, and that’s saying something, to be able write something original on such an old and potentially hackneyed theme. The opening line reminds me of Pablo Neruda’s “poetic questioning” technique as developed in his wonderful book, “The Book of Questions.” Highly recommended if you can find a copy. An entire book of poems phrased in question form.
Sean, I’m always aware of how much gone-over ground I have used in my work – I now feel I have been writing poetry since I was born, but in fact I only started in 2004, and I don’t believe there is a theme I have written on that had been previously untouched. So I’m gratified by your comment, and being even tangentially linked to Neruda is an honour.
